Hindu Calendar

The Hindu or Vedic calendar is based on the Moon cycle. It comprises 12 lunar months, each representing a full cycle of the Moon. To balance the lunar year of roughly 354 days with the solar year of about 365 days, an extra month is added every 30 months. This calendar is still used today to determine dates for Hindu religious events and has been in use in India for around 3000 years.

Vratas

Vratas

Observing Vrat is a healthy way to please the gods. A vrat measures the dedication and depth of a devotee's devotion. It is much more than just fasting. A Vrat is intertwined with numerous rituals and customs in Hindu culture. It involves a vow to abstain from food and sometimes even water for the entire duration of the custom or festival being observed. Beyond that, a vrat also involves the worship of a deity through prayers and deeds. It demonstrates a person's determination and willpower.

Tithi means a lunar day. Specifically, it is the time for the Moon to move 12° in the Zodiac with respect to the Sun. This can vary anywhere between 19 to 26 hours. Thirty such tithis make for a lunar month when the Moon completes a 360° motion in the Zodiac with respect to the Sun.
