She mostly played lead roles but was also a versatile actress. She was once one of the highest paid Indian actresses from 1976 to 1980. An Indian actress, writer, director, producer, dancer and politician, she also served as Chairperson of the National Film Development Corporation. She was elected to the Rajya Sabha, as a representative of the Bharatiya Janata Party for six years. She is also a lifetime member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
