Who is Dinesh Karthik?
Dinesh Karthik is an Indian wicket-keeper and right Handed batsman, fondly called as Karthik, who made his debut for the Indian cricket team in 2004. He became Captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2018 Indian Premier League season.
Karthik made his debut in early 1999, for the Tamil Nadu under-14 team and was promoted to the under-19 at the beginning of 2000-2001. He made his debut for the senior side the following season. However, he caught the public eye when he debuted for India in ODIs as a 19-year-old in late 2004. Karthik’s highest point in his career arrived when he replaced Sehwag in the 2007 tour of England as an opening batsman. He made a comeback when he earned a position as a batsman in the team. He performed well in India’s unbeaten Champions Trophy campaign in 2013.
After being with the Delhi franchise for two years, Karthik made the move to Kings XI Punjab for the 2011 team. Afterward, was transferred for the next season to Mumbai Indians, after that to the newly formed Gujarat Lions. In 2018, he was chosen to lead KKR against Chennai Super Kings, which was a milestone for his career.
His international career never really took off, but Karthik was still a giant in domestic cricket though.
His full name is Krishna Kumar Dinesh Karthik, born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He began playing cricket at the age of 10. Karthik did his education at Carmel School and Fahaheel Al-Watanieh Indian Private School in Kuwait (as his father was placed there) and finally from 8th standard, he studied at Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai. He was coached in cricket by his father, who was a first-division cricketer from Chennai. Disappointed that his career was hindered when he was forced by his family to put his education first, Karthik’s father did not want his son to suffer the same fate and trained him hard from an early age.
Karthik honed his reflexes at a young age by having his father throw hard leather balls at him at high speed. He was initially a batsman and learned wicket-keeping with the Tamil Nadu youth teams where Robin Singh considered him to be fit for wicket keeping.
Thereafter a specialized training camp under the supervision of former Indian Keeper Kiran More helped him refine his technique and as a result, he came back a more technically accomplished and confident wicketkeeper.
Karthik was married to Nikita Vanjara in 2007. However, they divorced in 2012. Later Karthik married Indian squash player Dipika Pallikal in August 2015.
